Sacred Heart School students raise nearly $1,400 to combat cancer

EAST PROVIDENCE — Students at Sacred Heart School in East Providence raised $1,359.08 in coin and online donations from family and friends during the 24th annual Student Series’ Pennies for Patients® fundraiser, sponsored by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in partnership with Olive Garden.
The Society needs ongoing support from the community – including students, parents and friends! SHS students were eager to join the Hero Squad. For three weeks, students at Sacred Heart donated to this educational and inspiring giving program dedicated to finding a cure for one of the leading fatal cancers of children ages 1-21 — leukemia. Seventy six percent of all donations support life-saving cancer research, patient support services, and financial aid.
The top fundraising classroom at Sacred Heart, Grade 6, will receive a reward pizza lunch.
By pooling their donations, healthy children had a chance to learn about and help children struggling with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, and myeloma. The challenges of treatment for children with leukemia are enormous — including numerous hospitalizations, rounds of chemotherapy, spinal taps, bone marrow transplants, and hair loss. Nevertheless these patients retain high hopes. With ground-breaking advances in research, 90 percent of children with leukemia survive today, compared to a dismal 4 percent survival rate in 1960.
Donations to Pennies for Patients are still welcomed through Sacred Heart School by donating online through the Sacred Heart School link at www.PenniesForPatients.org. To learn more about LLS and their services contact their office at 401-943-8888.
