Rhode Island Catholic, El Catolico win 17 national awards from Catholic Press Association

QUÉBEC CITY — Rhode Island Catholic and its Spanish language edition El Catolico de Rhode Island, publications of the Diocese of Providence, won an unprecedented ​​17 national editorial and advertising press awards on Friday, June 23, during the 2017 Catholic Media Conference Awards Banquet, hosted by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada at Laval University. The Rhode Island Catholic, formerly known as the Providence Visitor, has been publishing since 1875.

Rhode Island Catholic Editorial Awards

Third Place: Bishop Thomas J. Tobin: Best Regular Column by a Bishop or Archbishop for “Without a Doubt: Are Catholic Schools Worth Saving?; Let’s Talk About Hope and Peace, Not Fear; My Mom’s Christmas Cookies.”

First Place: Executive Editor Rick Snizek: Best Explanation of the Church’s Position on Marriage for “Marriage and Annulments in the Diocese of Providence.”

Second Place: Executive Editor Rick Snizek: Best Reporting on the Celebration of a Sacrament for “St. Peter Sacraments Program a Vital Ministry for Autistic Students.”

Third Place: Staff Reporter Lauren Clem: Best Coverage of Children and Teens Younger than 18 for “All Saints Students Take a Call from the Heavens.”

Third Place: Staff Reporter Lauren Clem and Executive Editor Rick Snizek: Best Coverage of Local Politics for: “State to Offer Free SAT; General Assembly Considering Assisted Suicide Bill; Diocese Speaks Out Against Transit Fare Hikes for Elderly, Disabled.”

Third Place: Executive Editor Rick Snizek: Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues — Solidarity for “Faith Leaders Show Solidarity After Synagogue is Defaced.”
