Reverend Frederic D. Dean

WOONSOCKET — Reverend Frederic D. Dean, 89, Pastor Emeritus of St. Aloysius Parish in Woonsocket, died Thursday, August 31, 2017.

Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, son of the late Harold and Florrie (Thompson) Dean, he attended Lincoln elementary schools and Central Falls Junior and Senior High Schools. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Holy Cross College in Dunkirk, New York, and St. Thomas Seminary College in Denver, Colorado. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado on June 5, 1965 at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence, by the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney.

For nine years, Father Dean served within the Diocese of Pueblo in various assignments as an assistant pastor, high school teacher, and Secretary to the Bishop. He returned to Rhode Island in 1974; and for the 1974-75 academic year, Father Dean was a teacher at Woonsocket Regional School. In 1975, he was appointed assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Woonsocket, and remained there until 1986. Father was incardinated into the Diocese of Providence on December 15, 1979. He served as assistant pastor at Precious Blood Parish, Woonsocket (1986-87) and then pastor of St. Teresa Parish, Providence (1987-93) and of St. Aloysius Parish, Woonsocket (1993-98) from which he retired as Pastor Emeritus. In 1992, Father Dean made sabbatical studies in Guadalajara, Mexico.

After his retirement, Father Dean lived at St. John Vianney Residence in Providence and continued to assist at local parishes.

Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland, will be private.

A Memorial Mass for Father Dean will be scheduled for a later date.
