PROVIDENCE - The Diocese of Providence's Office of Comprehensive Youth Ministry has announced the 10th Annual Open CYO Diocesan Quiz Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 25, beginning at 1 p.m., at the Father Marot CYO Center, 53 Federal St., Woonsocket.

The competition is open to young adults from parishes throughout the Diocese of Providence.

"Quiz Bowl is always a fun, exciting event for young people, particularly youths who may not feel comfortable with some of our other competitive activities," said Louise Dussault, director of the Office for Comprehensive Youth Ministry. "It's important that young people have multiple opportunities in a team setting to showcase their talents and skills."

Quiz Bowl is a competition consisting of rapid questions and answers on a number of topics. More than 60 young adults from nine parishes participated in the event last year with the team from St. Joseph Parish, West Warwick, capturing first place by correctly answering the question: What is the math term for a six-sided polygon? (Correct answer - hexagon.)

The team-based competitive event is based on quick recall of intellectual facts. Teams of four youths, ages 14-19, sit at light boards with switches and are asked questions geared to their age group about subjects such as history, science, sports, literature, religion and current events. Teams signal in to answer the questions and points are awarded for correct answers. First and second place teams are awarded trophies. The top three teams will also have their photo published in The Providence Visitor.
