WAKEFIELD — The Prout School has hired two co-athletic directors for the 2019-2020 school year. Duane Maranda will join Kelly Moniz in leading the Crusader athletic program. Previous athletic director Andrew Bevilacqua decided it was best for his growing family that he return to his former position in Pawtucket public schools, though he will continue to coach the Crusader volleyball team.
Maranda, from Westerly, is a Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA), a career firefighter and EMT at the Town of East Hartford Fire Department. He has held the position of head football coach at Bacon Academy, St. Bernard School, and Westerly High School -- where he will serve for one more season. Moniz, from Saunderstown, was a volunteer for the athletic program at The Prout School for seven years prior to serving as assistant athletic director to Bevilacqua last year. Her fundraising efforts include organizing and running the Crusader Golf Classic, which provides funding for a part-time athletic trainer for Prout’s student-athletes. Moniz was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2016.
Looking ahead to the new arrangement, Principal David Estes said, “We feel that Kelly and Duane will collectively provide the experiences and skills to build upon the many strengths of our athletic program.”
The Prout School’s athletic program includes 23 DI and DII athletic teams. Last year the program boasted two championships: the boys swim team won the 2019 Division III championship and the golf team was the undefeated 2019 Southern Division champion. More than 60 percent of Prout’s students participate in interscholastic athletics and many of them are multi-sport athletes.
