Newspaper insensitive to Jewish concerns in use of sacred name

Posted

To the Editor:

The Holy See asks that the sacred Hebrew name for God not be used In the liturgy, which policy I applaud. The Rhode Island Catholic responds by plastering the name on the front and back pages of the paper and in the article in between. Does that make sense? It certainly didn’t show much reverence for the Holy Name or much respect for Jewish sensibilities.

I’d also like to ask Rome why they approved the use of the Name in the Latin breviary in the Canticle of Moses from the book of Deuteronomy at morning prayer on Saturdays of week one. It’s completely untraditional and quite jarring, but not enough to drive me back to the English.
