SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Bridget Bernardo, a sixth grade student at Msgr. Matthew F. Clarke Catholic Regional School, has been selected as one of 12 reporters nationally to serve as a correspondent for “Time for Kids” (TFK) magazine.

Bernardo’s winning essay and video was selected from 500 entries and was chosen after successfully completing two rounds the selection process before being named a winner.

In the first round of the selection process, Bernardo submitted an article about two past TFK reporters and how their experiences as correspondents impacted their lives.

In the second round, Bernardo had to submit an article about a hometown hero, and chose Rhode Islander Betty Ann Waters whose brother Kenny was wrongly convicted and imprisoned for a murder he did not commit.

To fight for his release, Waters put herself through college and law school. The film, “Conviction,” released by Fox in 2010 recalls Waters’ 18-year unrelenting struggle to free her brother.

Bernardo also created a video “Five Amazing Things About Me” as part of the selection process. The video highlights academics, athletics, faith, family, friends and the beauty of the Ocean State.

In the September 2012 edition of TFK, Bernardo weighs in on “The Cursive Debate.” Should cursive writing instruction continue in schools? Bridget says, “Yes,” citing the importance of signatures on documents and the personal sentiments of a handwritten letter.
