Mercymount students recognized at Graduation ceremony

CUMBERLAND, RI - The eighth grade class at Mercymount celebrated their progression from middle school to high school at graduation ceremonies held on June 14 at Mt. St. Rita Chapel.

Thirty-one students were awarded diplomas of graduation after a Mass of celebration. The class included 10 students who started together in PreK in 2003. The celebrant was Fr. David Costa of North Attleboro, MA.

The Presidential Award for Academic Excellence was presented to David Acciardo, Ghazi Ahmad, Jordan Khabbaz, Amelia Larson and Ian McCarthy-Kelley. This award is earned by keeping an average of 90 and above in all subjects from fourth through eighth grades, and scoring at least an 85 percent or higher in the reading and math CAT tests given each year.

Amelia Larson and Ghazi Ahmad were recognized as having received prestigious honors as Middle Level Scholar Leaders. They were recently honored at a banquet in West Warwick, RI. They received the award for demonstrating academic initiative and scholarship, providing service to classmates and the school, exemplifying positive attitudes and demonstrating leadership in the classroom and school activities. The event was organized by the Rhode Island Middle Level Educators and the New England League of Middle Schools with support from Lifetouch National School Studios. Amelia is the daughter of Arthur and Suzanne Larson of Cumberland, RI. Ghazi is the son of Dr. Irfan Ahmad and Dr. Sadia Iftikhar of North Attleboro, MA.

The Principal’s Award, presented annually to a student chosen by the faculty for their all-around academic and personal distinction, was given to Sean Gray. Sean is the son of Mark and Julie Gray of Lincoln, RI.

The Williams College Book Award was presented to Alexandra Miller. The award is given to an 8th grade student who is recognized for their academic excellence, extracurricular involvement and clear leadership potential. Alexandra is the daughter of Nathan and Michelle Miller of Blackstone, MA.

The students will continue on to high schools including Bishop Feehan High School, Bishop Hendricken High School, LaSalle Academy, Moses Brown, Mt. St. Charles Academy, St. Mary Academy Bayview, St. Raphael Academy, Uxbridge High School and Xaverian Brothers High School.

Mercymount Country Day School, a private Catholic elementary school (Pre-K- Grade 8) is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy Northeast. Our 45 professional faculty and staff members are dedicated to the total education of the child on all levels: spiritual, intellectual, physical, and psycho-social.
