The church community of St. Mary Church in West Warwick gathered for a Mass of Remembrance on Sunday, Feb. 18, in recognition of the 15th Anniversary of the Station Nightclub Fire. Father Douglas J. Spina, pastor, served as the celebrant, offering the Mass for the victims, families, friends and parishioners affected by the tragic events of that night. During his homily, Father Spina’s reflections on the Gospel included personal recollections of the night of February 20, 2003. “After this tragic event, our lives have been irreversibly and dramatically altered,” Father Spina said. “Human life is the most precious gift. Recalling the memory of those 100 souls which were lost brings the mystery of our faith into clearer perspective. Our Lenten journey is a reflection of our hope, our life in Christ, a share in his cross and resurrection.”

One hundred individuals perished on February 20, 2003, when pyrotechnics designed to accompany a concert being staged by the band Great White ignited a fire that quickly consumed the building.
