Mass for Public Safety to honor those who serve and protect

PROVIDENCE — The community will soon have an opportunity to pray and honor all those who serve and protect; a special chance to offer their prayerful support for those who continue to put their lives on the line.

A Mass for police and fire personnel, first responders and their families will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m., in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence. Bishop Robert C. Evans will serve as the celebrant and homilist. Formerly referred to as the “Blue Mass,” the annual Mass for Public Safety will welcome the community of faith to give thanks to God for the service of first responders and to pray to God for their continued well-being and protection.

Chief Brian Sullivan, president of the R.I. Police Chiefs Association, who also serves as chief of police in Lincoln, described that the feeling at this event is very positive and at times overwhelming. Each year the historic cathedral is filled with rows upon rows of men and women in uniform from fire stations and police departments throughout the state. And the community is by their side — taking to heart the message of “loving thy neighbor” — at a time when that is more vital than ever.

“It’s heartwarming and at times overwhelming when you walk into the beautiful cathedral and see how many people are there to recognize the job you do each and every day. Sometimes first responders don’t often get to see that appreciation.”

Chief Sullivan explained that the Mass for Public Safety is a reminder that not only is the community with them, but the church is with them as well.

“It’s reassuring to first responders that the public and diocese have us in their thoughts and prayers and appreciate what emergency responders do each and every day.”

All Police and Fire Personnel and First Responders should dress in uniform and gather outside the Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul at 9:30 a.m. in preparation to participate in the entrance procession for the Mass.
