Marriage oriented to procreation of children

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

Mrs. Kathy Pesta writes (Letters, 1/28/2010) that her sacramental marriage, which is hopefully open to the transmission of new life, will not be altered by the civil marriage of homosexuals, who by definition are incapable of procreation with one another.

Clearly Mrs. Pesta should recall that marriage is intrinsically oriented toward the procreation and education of children. Therefore homosexual nuptials would completely redefine the nature of marriage. Mrs. Pesta should also recall that marriage is instituted neither by the state nor by the church.

Marriage is a natural institution confected by a couple who pledge a life of fidelity and fruitfulness. If either bonding or babies are definitively excluded from the union, then the merger cannot be called a marriage. Even the union of an adoptive homosexual couple would result in the elimination of motherhood on the one hand or fatherhood on the other hand. If this wouldn’t change the nature of marriage and truly alter society, I can’t imagine what would!
