Last week the R.I. House Judiciary Committee heard testimony in favor and opposed to two measures. One bill, sponsored by Rep. Arthur Handy (D-Cranston). would legalize homosexual marriage while the other, sponsored by Rep. Jon Brien (D-Woonsocket), would put the issue of marriage before the people of Rhode Island as a constitutional referendum.
Hundreds of people turned out for the hearing in order to voice their opinions and make their beliefs on the bills heard.
The testimony lasted for hours and concluded shortly before 2:00 a.m. the next morning. Many of the committee members as well as many of the general public stayed until the bitter end. Without a doubt the next day they were quite exhausted and fatigued. However, the momentum helping to stop the legal redefinition of marriage cannot afford to take a nap. We are at a critical juncture for our state and for the future of marriage itself. Catholics and others who support marriage and oppose homosexual marriage need to continue to make their voices heard on Smith Hill.
