One of the most beloved teachers in Saint Raphael Academy’s long history was recognized for his outstanding teaching on December 20 with a Golden Apple Award. Terry Murray, an English and Psychology teacher was surprised in his classroom with the award, presented by Channel 10’s Patrice Wood, Dr. Ken Wagner, Commissioner of the Rhode Island Department of Education, Daniel Ferris, Superintendent of the Diocese of Providence Catholic Schools, Bobby Gondola from Hasbro, and Kristen Hayes-Leite, Rhode Island Teacher of the Year 2018. “It’s very humbling,” said Murray, who was completely amazed by the large group of colleagues, administrators and alumni interrupting his morning psychology class. Nominated by Vice Principal for Student Life Marc Thibault, Murray has been a teacher at SRA for nearly 40 years. The award from Channel 10 is presented to “an outstanding teacher who deserves recognition for their efforts in the classroom,” according to its website. This is the first Golden Apple Award for a teacher at Saint Raphael Academy. Murray is not only a fixture in the classroom, but he is also the long-time moderator of the award-winning Drama Club, annually directing two plays, bringing students to participate in the New England Drama Festival, and assisting with the spring Saints Gala. His dedication to the craft has helped the Drama Club win 23 state titles. He is a member of the Rhode Island Theater Education Association, and won a New England Drama Lifetime Membership Award in 2013. Coincidentally, Ms. Hayes-Leite’s son was the recipient of The Terry Murray Performance Award one year.
