LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Is more legislation the best solution to control guns?

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

I would like to respond the article “Pastors offer support for toughening gun laws” in the April 18 edition.

As a practicing Catholic who is a strong believer in our country’s Constitution, including the Second Amendment, I respectfully request that the priests named in this article please consider the following before supporting any proposed legislation on gun control.

First, what’s so different, or better, about these new measures that’s not already in the hundreds of gun laws already on the books — which are not being enforced now? Is the message supposed to be one of: “Well, now we really mean it?”

Secondly, and most important, the architects of this legislation are some of the same politicians that you as priests, and the church as an organization, disagree with both logically and ethically over abortion and gay marriage. So what is it about this legislation that makes you believe they’re being any more logical, or ethical?
