PROVIDENCE — To celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the diocesan Multicultural Ministry and Office of Black Catholics, along with the St. Patrick Parish community, co-hosted “A Dream of Unity,” on Monday at St. Patrick Church.

After St. Patrick Pastor Father James Ruggieri welcomed the gathering, guest orators, representing a variety of parishes and religious institutions across the diocese, including Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Bishop McVinney School, St. Patrick’s Academy, Providence College and the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, read excerpts from some of the civil rights leader’s most famous speeches, and offered prayers.

The event also featured musical selections by the St. Patrick Adult Choir, directed by Silvio Cuellar, along with the Bishop McVinney Choir. Patty January, coordinator of the Office of Black Catholic Ministry, offered closing remarks and a look ahead to February’s Black History Month, during which a National Day of Prayer will be observed on February 4 for the African American and African Family. The day was created in 1989 by Father James Goode, OFM, and set aside to give special thanks to God for families and place every care in the arms of Jesus.
