'Heat' Challenge Issued to Rhode Island Businesses

(SMITHFIELD, RI)- Cavanagh Company, bakers of altar bread for many Catholic Churches throughout the country, today issued a challenge to local businesses in support of ‘Keep the Heat On’.

Cavanagh has pledged a total of $20,000 to match donations from local businesses to the diocesan heating assistance program.

“My brother Peter and I feel that for those families impacted by the current economy, heating costs present another hardship and burden,” said Brian Cavanagh, chief executive officer of Cavanagh, and parishioner of St. Philip Parish in Greenville. “The Cavanagh Family is hopeful that this challenge will encourage others to support the Keep the Heat On campaign and provide another option for those with no place to turn for heating assistance.”

“The diocese and those who will benefit from Cavanagh Company’s generous gesture are very grateful for this challenge,” said The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence who established the program in 2005. “The support of local businesses and individuals is critical to the continued success of this wonderful program that makes a real difference in the everyday lives of Rhode Islanders and their families.

Since it was established in 2005, “Keep the Heat On” has provided more than $600,000 in heating assistance to more than 2,000 Rhode Island households through grants from the Catholic diocese and private contributions. The program provides direct payment to local utility companies on behalf of those with a demonstrated need for assistance.

Businesses and individuals may make a donation using a secure web server at www.heatri.com or mail donations to: Office of Community Services, c/o Keep the Heat On – Cavanagh Challenge, 184 Broad Street, Providence, RI 02903.
