Has God been Replaced?

TO THE EDITOR:

One of the things that is happening in Washington is that there is such an assault on the dignity of life that it is now jeopardizing our freedom and costing more to us taxpayers. It is no longer only about abortion. Following are a few examples.

One of the first things Obama did was to reverse the so-called Mexico City policy that kept taxpayer money from being used by international organizations for abortions. We, as taxpayers, will be footing this bill. He already sent 50 million dollars to the UN for this purpose.

The next thing the president did was take the first step in rescinding a moral conscious regulation which protects medical professionals from participating in a medical procedure that goes against their conscience. Without this protection healthcare workers will be subject to such horrible things as losing their careers. I thought America was a land of freedom. By the way if you object to this you have until April 9th to send you objection to the Health and Human Services (HHS) department.

Obama recently lifted the government restriction on embryonic-stem-cell research and the funding of the research. This results in, one, killing a person (an embryo is a human being) and, next, costing the taxpayer more money. The sad part of this is that other stem cell procedures have shown more promise.

Finally, Obama promised Planned Parenthood that he would sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) which only gives freedom to the pro abortion crowd. This will result with abortion on demand. They are many other horrible things in this bill but I will mention only three. A provision being considered for the act is one that denies any medical treatment for a child who survives an abortion. Our president sadly, in the past, has supported such a measure. Putting abortion aside, a child who survives an abortion is a person and deserves the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness according to our Constitution. This is infanticide (or murder). Next, there is a provision that parental notification and authorization will not be required for a young girl to have an abortion. In essence the government will be taking away parental authority. Finally, this bill would also make the gross partial birth abortion procedure legal. It is a procedure in which the doctor carefully keeps three inches of the baby’s head in the womb so that it qualifies as an abortion and then kills the baby. Witnesses who have observed such a procedure say that they clearly see the baby react in pain. Just imagine, the baby came within three inches of living.

To see how all encompassing these assaults on the dignity of life I would like to mention a provision that is in the recent stimulus package. It says that a cost-effectiveness approach will be taken in government-supported health care. Now that I am a senior member of society this one concerns me. A federal council will be established to decide whether it is cost effective to treat an older person. They will compare the cost of a medical procedure to the life expectancy of the patient and determine whether it should be performed. For example, this council will decide if an otherwise robust patient who is 74 years old and needs a heart bypass operation can have the operation in light of the fact that he (or she) is expected to live only a few more years. They are playing God.
