Gwendolyn Marie (Pike) Behan

NEWPORT — Gwendolyn Marie Behan, 98, died May 30 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the mother of Father George P. Behan and St. Joseph Sister Mary Behan, both of Newport.

Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late Thatcher Thayer and Mary (Cleary) Pike. She was the widow of George P. Behan and was a lifelong resident of the Point.

She attended Rogers High School and Newport Hospital Nursing School, and was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She worked and volunteered at several local elementary schools as a teacher's aide.

In addition to Father Behan and Sister Behan, she is survived by another daughter, Julianne Kelly of Fairhaven, MA, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was the sister of the late John Dudley Pike, Madeline Donohue, Agnes Donovan, Gardiner Pike and Dorothy Beekman.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 2 in St. Joseph Church. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
