LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Great hope for renewal of compassion in the Catholic Church

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

Father Randall's letter to the editor regarding Father Kiley's article concerning Cardinal Martini gave me hope for a renewal of kindness and compassion in our Catholic Church. I too, felt Father Kiley's article was critical and harsh.

Father Kiley's recent article on bullying was lacking in any compassion or insight as to how bullying has changed with the onset of social media. Telling kids to "get over it" was insensitive and unnecessary.

As Father Randall pointed out in his letter, "Of course the church has to look at its treatment of divorced Catholics." And I will add that "love the sinner, hate the sin" has been an abysmal failure and needs to be re-visited as well.

As we start the Year of Faith, we need to welcome back those who may not "fit the mold" but have the desire to receive the living body and blood of Christ. I have never seen a picture of Jesus with one of his arms extended to halt people from coming to him. His arms are wide open. We need to follow suit.
