Food for thought, the Food of Truth

TO THE EDITOR:

We have always been taught to eat food that is good for us in order to maintain our health as much as we can. It not only feeds our bodies, but our minds as well.
Our bodily systems need this nourishment in order to function. But the Food of Truth is when our Lord chooses to feed us with his most precious body, blood, soul and divinity.
Jesus has given us the totality of his life and reveals the ultimate origin of this love. Only truth can make us free. As St. Augustine has written: “What does our soul desire more passionately than truth?” Christ has told us, “I am the truth, the way and the life.” Jesus in the Eucharist shows in particular the truth about the love which is the very essence of God.
The Eucharist is the very center of the Church’s life and for our lives, for God is love. For the Lord has become for us the food of truth. We are all invited to share this gift. Without Him, freedom loses its focus. For scripture teaches us, “My father gives you the true bread from heaven for the bread of life and is He who comes down from heaven for the bread of God is he who comes from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Our Church’s history comes from the Eucharistic celebration and is the source and summit of her life and mission. It is ours as well Jesus waits with his arms opened for us.
