Father Howard Patrick Eisel S.S.C.

WARREN – Missionary Society of St. Columban Father Howard Patrick Eisel, 82, died Aug. 31 at Crestwood Care Center, Warren. He was a former resident of St. Columban’s Retirement Home, Bristol.

Born in Brainerd, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Frank and Rose (Fleischhacker) Eisel.

Father Eisel was ordained on December 18, 1954 in Milton, Mass. by Archbishop Richard Cushing. He sailed to Korea in 1955 where he served as a missionary priest serving with the Columban Fathers in Kwanju.

After the Korean War, Father Eisel started 4-H clubs to help feed the people and they prospered with farming and fishing. In 1983 Father Eisel returned to his home diocese of Duluth, Minn. and later served at St. Joseph Church, Crosby, Minn., from 1991 to 2009.

In July 2009 he moved to St. Columban’s Retirement Home, Bristol.

Father Eisel is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Wetherbee of Brainerd, and Helen Eisel of Crosby. He was the brother of the late Evelyn Roberts and Philip Eisel.

A Memorial Mass was concelebrated Sept. 7 in the Columban Fathers Chapel, Bristol. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 13 at St. Joseph Church, Crosby. Burial was in St. Mathias Cemetery, Crosby.
