Father Edward F. Boland, 91

WEST WARWICK — Rev. Edward F. Boland, 91, Pastor Emeritus of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, West Warwick, died on October 20, 2010.

Born in Providence, a son of the late John H. and Anastasia (McConnell) Boland, he attended St. Patrick School, LaSalle Academy, and Providence College, Providence. He completed studies for the priesthood at St. Paul Seminary, Ottawa, Canada, and Our Lady of Providence Seminary, Warwick Neck. He was ordained a priest on March 4, 1944 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence by Bishop Francis P. Keough.

Father Boland served as assistant pastor at St. Michael Church, Georgiaville (1944-48); at St. Edward Church, Pawtucket (1948-58); teacher at St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket (1952-58); at St. Mary Church, Newport (1959-60); and at St. Rose of Lima Church, Warwick (1960-68). In September 1968 he became pastor at Our Lady of Victory parish, Ashaway, and in February 1972 he was transferred to Sts. Peter and Paul Church, West Warwick where he served until his retirement in August 1989 as Pastor Emeritus.

After his retirement from parish administration, Fr. Boland first moved to St. John Vianney Residence, Providence and continued to assist in various parishes and at Kent County Hospital in Warwick. In 2005, he transferred his residence to Jeanne Jugan Residence in Pawtucket.

In addition to his other pastoral duties, Fr. Boland was also chaplain of the Providence County Ancient Order of Hibernians (1955); chaplain of the General Roscrans Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus (1959); and chaplain of Gibson Council No. 181, Knights of Columbus (1972) and the Fourth Degree Wallace Assembly.

Father Boland is survived by two sisters, Louise O’Mara of North Smithfield and Madeline Egan of North Providence; two brothers, Paul G. Boland of Warwick and the Most Reverend Ernest B. Boland, O.P. of Providence, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John H. Boland, Jr., Sister Helen Boland, R.S.M. and Mary Gurney.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for the repose of his soul at SS. Peter and Paul Church, West Warwick on October 25 with Bishop Thomas J. Tobin as the main celebrant and Bishops Robert C. Evans, Robert E. Mulvee, Louis E. Gelineau and Francis X. Roque concelebrated. Bishop Ernest B. Boland, brother of the deceased, was the homilist.

Burial was in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in West Warwick.
