NORTH KINGSTOWN — Missionary of St. Charles Father Angelo Susin, 95, died March 2 at Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home.
Born in Fonzaso, Belluno, Italy, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Susanna (Pasa) Susin.
Father Susin professed religious vows as a member of the Missionaries of St. Charles Scalabrinians on April 8, 1934, and was ordained to the priesthood on October 16, 1938.
He came to the United States in 1939, and two years later, was assigned to minister at St. Rocco Church, Johnston where he served as assistant pastor from 1941-1946, as pastor from 1948-1957, and was responsible for erecting the present church building.
In 1957, Father Susin was sent to England to open a Scalabrinian mission. For the next six years, he ministered in the Italian Catholic Mission, Bedford, England and then served as a member of the General Council of the Scalabrinians in Rome, Italy. He returned to England in 1969 and was appointed pastor of Holy Cross, Bedford, until 1971 and then served as director of the Italian Catholic Mission in Peterborough, England until 1978.
The following year, Father Susin was transferred to the United States and appointed director of Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home in North Kingstown. In 1989 he became assistant pastor of Holy Ghost Church, Providence.
In 1998 he moved to the Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini Residence in North Kingstown, and was recently admitted to the Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home.
Father Susin was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a spiritual advisor to many Italian-American groups and associations throughout the diocese.
He is survived by a brother, Giuseppe (Joe) Susin of Cranston; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 7 in St. Rocco Church. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
