Don’t legalize extreme abortion practices in R.I.

TO THE EDITOR:

New York’s political leaders have stirred the moral conscience of the nation passing the nation’s most far-reaching pro-abortion law and then celebrating the killing of unborn children up to and including the day of delivery. As shocking as it is, we shouldn’t be surprised. From now on in New York nothing stands in the way of a woman taking her baby’s life — days, hours, or even minutes before she is born! This New York legislation is now the most permissive of our 50 states. Here in Rhode Island on Jan. 29 our Democratic CATHOLIC governor, secretary of state and mayor of Providence all presented testimony strongly favoring an extreme New York style abortion bill to the R.I. House Judiciary Committee.
In addition to removing all regulations greatly expanding abortion in R.I., the new bill would remove the ban on partial birth abortion which, at the time, I worked on as diocesan Respect Life Coordinator. In 1996, R.I. passed a ban on partial birth abortion, recognizing it as a BARBARIC abortion procedure performed on babies in the fifth through ninth. Most people would not stand for such cruelty to any animal. Governor Raimondo would be wise to pay attention to the backlash that Governors Cuomo and Northam have experienced in carrying out their horrific agenda. Rhode Island’s Catholics need to know the candidates’ positions before voting and elect people who value the inalienable right to life of every human being no matter how small.
