Diocese of Providence celebrates Dominican tradition honoring Virgin of Altagracia with Mass, dance and food
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, hundreds of faithful gathered in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul for the celebration in honor of the Virgin of Altagracia, a traditional devotion of the Dominican Republic. The Most Rev. Jesus Castro Marte the Auxiliary Bishop of Santo Domingo was the celebrant and homilist. Prior to Mass, there were confessions and many gathered to pray the rosary. After Mass, there was a festival with dances and ethnic foods in the cathedral hall. According to statistics gathered by the V Encuentro team, there are more than 50,000 Dominicans in Rhode Island, the largest Hispanic minority group.
