LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Differing points of view confusing to readers

To the Editor:

On page 16 of the RI Catholic in the issue of Sept 11, there were two articles on abortion and the upcoming election. The one on top was written by the asst. director for Policy and Communications at the Secretariat of Pro-Life activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It explained clearly that there is not a single issue as important as pro-life in the coming elections.

Below that article there is an another from a sister of Notre Dame, namely their associate provincial. The article’s title, "Conscience must inform voting," is the antithesis of the previous one.

I wonder why the RI Catholic would even bother trying to confuse voters by printing the second article.

It amazes me that a nun [sic. sister] in a religious order would try to equate the issues of health care, immigration, homelessness and unemployment with the taking of an innocent human life! Her take on it, "I cannot make a political choice on a single issue."

How can anyone, let alone a Catholic nun [sic. sister] profess their belief in Jesus Christ and ignore the 4,000 babies a day who are exterminated in their mother's wombs? Wouldn't these children qualify as the "least of my brothers"?

Sr McCarthy also states that, "the measure of our lives is our treatment of the most vulnerable, not our Mass attendance." Is Sr. McCarthy trying to tell us that it is okay to miss Mass on Sundays? Our Church is clear that it is a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday. This is not based on opinion but can be found in the Catechism.

Sr. also talks about the death penalty being "off the radar" for this election. Well if Sr. McCarthy is trying to compare the amount of criminals who are killed by the death penalty with the number of abortions in the U.S. per year, she will certainly come up short.

Babies are being denied life, criminals have committed a violent crime against another innocent member of our society, how can the two be even remotely compared?
