To the Editor:
On the front page of the 9 February Rhode Island Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin makes a statement about Immigration reform. In it, he mentions ‘confusion.’ His words, regrettably, did little to clarify any aspect of the issue.
“Compassionate” immigration reform is what, exactly? Merriam-Webster says compassion is “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”
If immigration reform tries to alleviate the distress of Americans who have been hurt by illegal aliens, and are fearful of invaders, isn’t that compassionate?
The dialog about immigration must differentiate between legal and illegal immigration. That has been, and continues to be, a large part of the confusion.
We can no longer avoid the realization that enemies of freedom — often murderers — are all for open borders.
