LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Charity does indeed begin at home

Posted

TO?THE?EDITOR:

In his letter last week in response to the column “A Lenten Fast Acceptable to the Lord,” by Tony Magliano, Robert Midura expresses the idea that charity by individuals, not government, is the key to helping the poor.

In the past decades, many Catholics were not aware of the fundamental difference between charity by individuals and public welfare funded through taxation. In the process, they aligned themselves with liberal politics and are now finding themselves in the political company of the proponents of abortion, contraception, HHS mandate and homosexual marriage.

It may be time for us Catholics to push the “reset button” on our position on government largess and government control.
