A chalice used by St. John Paul II and belonging to late Providence diocesan priest Father Gerald W. Hussey has been donated to the Dominican Friars community at Providence College. Father Hussey was a 1968 graduate of the college. The chalice, which features a center node depicting Christ and the Apostles at the Last Supper, was presented to College Chaplain Father Peter Martyr Yungwirth, O.P., before a recent Mass in Father Gerald’s memory in St. Dominic Chapel on campus. The chalice was used at the Mass, which was celebrated by Father James F. Quigley, O.P., a former associate professor of theology at PC, and concelebrated by Father Peter Martyr. The chalice was used by Pope John Paul II at a Mass in his private chapel at the papal residence in the Vatican in 1996. Father Gerald was a concelebrant of the Mass. Father Yungwirth expressed appreciation on behalf of PC’s Dominican priests and said the gift reflected the “profound effect” the Friars and the College had on Father Hussey. “Using it here, then, is a beautiful way to honor those who taught Father Gerald at PC, Father Gerald himself, who had a priestly heart, and St. John Paul II, whose legacy continues to guide and aid the Church.” Father Hussey, who served as a diocesan priest for 40 years, died on March 23. He was pastor emeritus of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Little Compton and of St. Madeleine Sophie Parish in Tiverton.
