Brother William Jogues Murphy

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Christian Brother William Jogues Murphy, 70, died Aug. 19 at St. Joseph Care Center.

Born in the Bronx, New York, he entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers on July 2, 1956 and professed his final vows on June 27, 1963. Brother Murphy received a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry in 1960 from Iona College, New Rochelle, and a master’s degree in chemistry from Simmons College, Boston.

He ministered as an educator and served in schools in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida and at Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, where he served as a science teacher from 1973 to 1976, and from 1979 to 1994.

Brother Murphy is survived by a sister, Rita Moore of Ireland; a brother, Jimmy Curtain of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 23 at Holy Family Church, New Rochelle. Burial was in the Christian Brothers’ Cemetery, West Park, N.Y.
