Brother Michael O’Neill, F.S.C., 90

LINCROFT, N.J. — Brother Michael O’Neill, F.S.C., 90, of De La Salle Hall, died Oct. 21.

Brother O’Neill was born in Manhattan, N.Y., and entered the novitiate of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1939, receiving the religious name of Brother Brendan Michael. He professed his perpetual vows on July 20, 1946 in Barrytown, N.Y.

Brother O’Neill earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from The Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; a master of arts degree in mathematics from Manhattan College, Riverdale, N.Y.; and a master of science degree in physics from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y.

He began his teaching career at LaSalle Institute in Troy, N.Y. He was also a prefect at Lincoln Hall in Lincolndale, N.Y., and then taught in Detroit, Mich.; at St Raphael Academy, Pawtucket; and at the former De LaSalle Academy, Newport. Brother O’Neill also served two separate assignments at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., adding up to 40 years of ministry. He retired in 1995 to the Christian Brothers Center, Narragansett.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 25 in the Our Lady of the Star Chapel, Christian Brothers Center. Burial was in the Brothers’ Cemetery, Narragansett.
