Brother Louis Calisto, C.S.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Scalabrini Brother Louis Calisto, 81, a member of the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles – Scalabrinians, died Feb. 1 at Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home.

Born in Elmont, Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late James and Josephine Calisto. Brother Calisto entered the Scalabrinian Congregation as a late vocation at age 35. After completing his novitiate in Cornwall, N.Y., he professed his first vows on August 22, 1968, and was given temporary assignments for training purposes. He made his perpetual profession in Staten Island, N.Y., on August 24, 1975.

Brother Calisto served as a eucharistic minister and his pastoral assignments were in religious education programs and hospital ministry. He ministered for many years at St. Charles Seminary (later St. Charles Mission Center) in Staten Island, where he was in charge of maintenance and provided the services related to the activities of the religious house.

Brother Calisto later served at parishes in New York and New Jersey, before being assigned to St. Rocco Parish in Johnston, where he served for several years. He moved to Scalabrini Villa in 2008. During his ministry, Brother Calisto also contributed to the building of several homes for the poor through the Scalabrinian mission in Haiti.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Feb. 4 in the Scalabrini Villa Nursing Home Chapel. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
