Brother Gerard Duncanson, FSC

PROVIDENCE – De La Salle Christian Brother Gerard Duncanson, a longtime faculty member at La Salle Academy, died Aug. 28 at Rhode Island Hospital.

Baptized Gerald Lloyd Duncanson on Sept. 14, 1938 in Yonkers, N.Y., he was the son of the late Lloyd B. and Gertrude (Fitzgerald) Duncanson. In later years, he cared for his stepmother Mildred Duncanson.

Brother Duncanson grew up in Malverne, N.Y. and then entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Barrytown, N.Y. where he received the religious habit and name, Brother Andrew Gerard, on Sept. 7, 1956. He professed perpetual vows on Aug. 25, 1963 in Barrytown.

Early in his career, Brother Duncanson ministered as a teacher and principal in schools conducted by the Christian Brothers in New York.

In 1969 he was assigned to the Christian Brothers Center in Narragansett, where he served as vocation director. He later became Auxiliary Visitor and Visitor (Provincial). From 1975 to 1981 he was associate director of the Sangre de Cristo Center in Santa Fe, N.M.

Brother Duncanson was assigned to La Salle Academy in 1981, and taught geometry and served as Moderator of Men’s Hockey.

He is survived by a brother, Robert J. Duncanson of Fayetteville, N.Y.; a niece and a nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 1 at St. Pius V Church. Burial was in the Christian Brothers’ Cemetery, Narragansett.
