Bishop Tobin appoints new superintendent for Catholic schools

PROVIDENCE—The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence recently announced the appointment of Daniel Ferris as Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Providence following a nationwide search.

Ferris, who currently serves as assistant superintendent for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, has more than 20 years of experience in Catholic education.

“Daniel’s many years of experience in Catholic education and his commitment to the faith will be a tremendous asset for our schools in the Diocese of Providence,” said Bishop Tobin. “I have no doubt that Daniel’s service as superintendent will enhance the work of our schools and through them the ministry of the Church in the Diocese of Providence will be truly blessed.”

Since 2007, Ferris has served as assistant superintendent for the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia where he spearheaded a number of different programs and initiatives to strengthen Catholic education in the areas of professional staff development, marketing, development and enrollment management. Prior to his service with the Diocese of Arlington, he served as head of the middle school and teacher from 2001-2007 at St. Anselm’s Abbey School in Washington, D.C. He also served as an instructor at The Catholic University of America, teaching Canonical Latin from 1998-2000.

“Through the Catholic Schools Office, I look forward to supporting parents in the diocese who desire an education in the faith for their children, and collaborating with the pastors, principals, teachers and staff to make the Catholic schools of the diocese the premier schools of choice in Rhode Island,” said Ferris. “I have come to appreciate the long and rich history of Catholic education in Rhode Island and, in every respect, I am committed to advancing and promoting that mission.”

He has published a number of works including: Enrollment Management Workbook, A Step-by-Step Guide to Recruiting and Retaining Students, Elementary Edition; and Enrollment Management Workbook, A Step-by-Step Guide to Recruiting and Retaining Students, High School Edition. Ferris is an associate member of Chief Administrators of Catholic Education (CACE), a member of the University of Notre Dame Task Force on the Participation of Latino Children and Parents in Catholic Education and a board member of the Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia. He also sits on the Catholic Diocese of Arlington’s Advisory School Board.

A Ph.D. candidate at The Catholic University of America, Ferris holds master’s degrees from The Catholic University of America and the University of Minnesota and bachelor’s from the University of Notre Dame.
