PROVIDENCE — Bishop McVinney School in South Providence has organized a school supplies drive for its students and teachers for the 2018-2019 academic year.
Like so many educators throughout the country, teachers at McVinney regularly purchase their own supplies to supplement the need in the classrooms. In this regard, their charitable giving falls in line with the national average. Data compiled from the 2015-16 National Teacher and Principal Survey indicates 94 percent of urban school teachers regularly spend their own money on classroom supplies without reimbursement. On average, they spend $526 - $554 annually.
“In its location in Lower South Providence, Bishop McVinney School has been on the front lines for 93 years, fighting for equity and opportunity for immigrant families and children of diverse backgrounds. Teachers and staff are accustomed to taking charge of the academic success of their students,” said Robin Tagliaferri, director of Advancement at Bishop McVinney School
The most sought after supplies are typically notebooks, loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, scissors, glue sticks and crayons. Items such as backpacks and Chromebooks are the most costly, but needed. Donations of art supplies are welcome as the purchase of student grade paints and papers is expensive.
The supplies can be dropped off at the school, located at 155 Gordon Ave., Providence, during business hours, Monday- Friday. The drive will be ongoing through the fall semester 2018.
