‘Big Brothers’ make all the difference

To The Editor:

Donald E. Cummings decided in 1972 to become a Big Brother to give back to his community. Nine Little Brothers and 36 years later, Cummings stands as the longest-serving Big Brother in Rhode Island.

"It worked out tremendously well for me," the quiet Cranston resident says.

While blessed with the selfless contributions of Cummings and scores of others, Big Brothers of Rhode Island needs still more. Currently 125 men mentor boys who lack a father's presence in their lives. The waiting list of potential Little Brothers, though, nearly triples that number. So C. Paul Oberg, president, and Val Sinesi, executive director, hope this Father's Day to interest men throughout the diocese in committing three hours each week to help a boy.

Time is precious and family demands strong, but there often is a way. While in elementary school, my son admired and learned from my Little Brother, a high school student, and later, during his own teenage years, shared numerous experiences with another Little Brother.

Last year Big Brothers of Rhode Island published a 55th anniversary booklet, an effort spearheaded by the ever-present Cummings. Contributors affirmed the lasting value of Big Brothers.

"The agency saved my son by exposing him to a positive male role model, which he desperately needed," Donna Watson of Providence wrote. "I thank God for Big Brothers."

Studies show that Little Brothers do better in school and in avoiding drugs and criminal activity and grow into productive community members. Diocesan churches are rich in men who can make a difference and in families willing to unselfishly support them in that pursuit.

Julian A Zienowicz, former Big Brothers president, said that his service was in recognition of all the good God has bestowed upon him. We hope that many parishioners agree with his sentiment.

"It's payback time."
