International Day of Peace

Bells to toll for Peace

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island State Council of Churches (RISCC) and the Peace Flag Project, are organizing a bell ringing event to observe the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.

On September 21, the bells of churches throughout Rhode Island will ring for five minutes at noon. The RISCC has asked that churches ring their steeple bells to echo hopes and prayers for peace and nonviolence in our state, country and world.

“Hearing these beautiful church bells will provide a time of inspiration and reflection for people

around the state,” said Rev. Donald Anderson, Executive Minister of the RISCC.

The International Day of Peace Was mandated by the United Nations in 1981 as a day of global cease-fire and humanity’s first day of peace.

“As the church bells ring, we hope that everyone will take a minute or so to reflect on peace and a peaceful world,” says Jane Maguire of the Peace Flag Project.
