All-star event to benefit Catholic schools

PROVIDENCE — The diocesan Catholic Schools Office has announced a special event to honor Catholic school graduates who have succeeded in professional athletics that will benefit students at inner-city Catholic schools. All proceeds from the November 18, 1:00 p.m. event at the West Valley Inn will support tuition assistance for Bread of Life, a consortium of Catholic schools in Rhode Island’s urban areas.

In addition to meeting the athletes, attendees will have the opportunity to bid on auction items including sports memorabilia such as a Cal Ripken autographed baseball, memorabilia baskets and much more.

The following individuals will be honored with The Saint Christopher Catholic School Sports Alumni Award for achievements in their respective sport: Lou Gorman, St. Michael School, 1944 and LaSalle Academy 1947, former general manager, Boston Red Sox; Jay Rainville, Bishop Hendricken High School, 2004, pitcher, Minnesota Twins, Double A Eastern League; Megan Belmont, Bishop Keough High School, standout hockey, soccer and baseball player who presently plays soccer for CCRI, Vanessa Cherenzia, The Prout School, 2005, a stand out soccer player at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, Karen Emma, St. Mary Academy-Bay View, 1993 star hockey player and Ed Walsh, Bishop Hendricken High School, 1984, former White Sox minor league player.

“We are pleased to honor and have the support of these distinguished graduates of Rhode Island Catholic schools,” said Sheila Durante, Superintendent of Schools. “Whether it be academics, a faith component, or athletics, Catholic schools provide their students with the necessary skills to succeed in one’s chosen career. We are grateful to have the support of our graduates for such an important cause – providing tuition assistance to those students who otherwise could not benefit from the value of a Catholic education.”

The mission of the Bread of Life schools consortium is to make a Catholic Education affordable for all children who live in urban areas and choose to attend Catholic schools. Founded in 2007, the consortium includes of Bishop McVinney School, Holy Ghost School and St. Patrick Schools, all in Providence; St. Mary School in Pawtucket; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Central Falls; and Christ the Redeemer Academy in West Warwick.
