Affording a proper burial

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

This is regarding the headlined article, "Ashes of the departed not treated with reverence" on the front page of the October 7 issue.

The article told of someone dropping off an urn containing cremated remains outside the chapel of St. Ann's Cemetery.

I was struck by the comment, "It was a sad example of what has become a trend of people not adhering to the proper burial rites of cremains." More important, isn't it a sign of poverty? Are there special provisions to allow for people of little or no means to dispose of their loved ones ashes? I hear recently of more and more cases of cremations simply for financial reasons.

We could use some education about the guidelines regarding cremation and burial.
