Abortion bills an unconscionable attack on our community

TO THE EDITOR:

Today in Rhode Island, there is a great moral/social/legal crisis facing us by the current proposed pro-abortion legislation (H-5127). This is an unconscionable attack on our community. It’s really asking us to define ourselves and take a stand. It literally is a life and death issue. Is this how far out the so called proverbial pendulum has swung? Are we so cowed and apathetic?

In 1932, Pope Pius XI Encyclical “CARITATE CHRISTI COMPULSI” (The Love of Christ Impels Us), addressed the economic crisis at the time. Pope Pius XI stated, “the desire for money is the root of all evils.” Continuing he asked, “the greatest question that can be proposed to human liberty: either for God or against God…” This question easily transitions to our current situation. Planned Parenthood and its supporters have mounted a fierce campaign here in Rhode Island against all people of good will and the unborn.
In 1948, Pope Pius XII, speaking to the Italian people facing a political crisis in electing a communist/Godless gov’t. asked, “With God or against God?” followed with “In your conscience there is no room for cowardliness.” People of wisdom and courage will always answer With God.

The Bishop of Albany, New York, called the New York State Abortion Law a “Death Star,” and said, “Once truth is separated from fiction and people come to realize the impact of the bill, they will be shocked to their core,” he stated. “By that time, however, it may be too late to save the countless lives that will be lost or spare countless women lifelong regret.” We cannot let this atrocity occur here in Rhode Island.

Chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities Archbishop Naumann stated on this type of legislation, “This legislation is evil, pure and simple. And it shocks the conscience to see such evil legislation greeted with raucous cheers and standing ovations. Most grieving to our Lord of Life is that those who advocate for abortion put their eternal souls in jeopardy.” We are much better than this!
