Many gathered in the Our Lady Chapel at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Providence as Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans joined the parish’s African Catholic Community for the celebration of Mass on Sunday, May 14. Following Mass, Bishop Evans blessed the new shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Church Baptistry. The shrine features a large triptych, featuring an image of Mary and Jesus in three panels side by side, which was donated by the Sisters of Mercy. The triptych, originally made in Italy for the chapel at Mount Saint Rita Health Centre in Cumberland, has found a new home at Holy Name. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima in Portugal, Bishop Evans dedicated the shrine in veneration of Mary. “This image will remind us of the close ties of Mary to Christ and his Church,” the bishop said. “In Mary, the Church joyously contemplates the image of all that the Church itself desires to be. Let us pray for God’s blessing upon this image and upon us so that we may grow in devotion to Mary and in faith in Jesus Christ.”
