LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A heartbeat away from the presidency

TO THE EDITOR:

As we all know, many practicing Catholics are, to lesser and greater degrees, dismayed by Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other "pro-choice" members of the Catholic flock holding high profile, political office.

One might have furthered the depth and breadth of their dismay by tuning in to the recent vice presidential debate. Asked about his Catholicism and his "pro choice" position on abortion, Vice President Joseph Biden's tired, thoroughly uncourageous answer, "I don't want to impose my beliefs of others, or tell women what to do with their bodies," rang craven and hollow. The logic of the Vice President’s answer is weak and disingenuous.

I felt the challenger, Rep. Paul Ryan, at least tried to express his principles on the abortion question– even if it was politically risky to do so. He also mentioned the obvious; you really don’t have to lean on your Catholicism to make a case against abortion. Reason and science alone can provide ample intellectual arguments. Catholics have numerous ways to speak up for what is right and just.
