PROVIDENCE – The joyous sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” filled the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul on June 7 when members of the La Salle Academy Class of 2012 received their diplomas, ending one part of a journey marked by academic and personal achievements, strong Christian values and a love for God, and a commitment to public service that has made a significant, positive impact on the state of Rhode Island.

Burlington, Vermont Bishop Salvatore R. Matano, a member of the Class of 1964, presided at the graduation ceremonies. Father Michael Najim, school chaplain, offered the invocation.
In her welcoming address, graduating senior Marissa L. Marandola told her classmates how La Salle Academy had transformed their lives.
“We entered La Salle as children, and now we graduate as men and women of character and intelligence. The Lasallian ideals of faith, service, and community have become integral to our characters . . . formed us into men and women of faith who will strive to trust in God and to enact his will in our world. We do not surrender our Lasallian identity, secure in the knowledge and comfort that Jesus will live in our hearts forever,” Marandola said.
Marandola was awarded highest honors for excellence in religious studies, as well as in English and Social Studies.
Senior speaker Patrick Burns told his fellow graduates that La Salle Academy will forever be part of their lives.
“The constant presence of faith in our lives has allowed us to become better, stronger, and more loving people, and has made our education all the more precious and special,” Burns said.
Burns also paused to reflect on the retirement of Christian Brother Michael McKenery, the long-time and much beloved president of the Academy, who steps down this month. “We have the distinction of being La Salle’s 140th graduating class, which speaks to the school’s tradition and longevity. We are also the last class to graduate under Brother Michael Mc-Kenery. ... Ours is the last class to experience four years of Brother Michael’s tremendous leadership, guidance and care.”
“This is in a sense my graduation as well, and I need to savor every moment along with you,” admitted Brother McKenery in his final address to the graduates. “I am so proud to be a member of the graduating class of 2012.” Brother McKenery said he would fondly remember being a cast member in the school production of “West Side Story,” and serving as the unofficial moderator of the soccer team. “I will wear that jacket with pride,” he said.
