Open Letter to First Communicants

Posted

Dear First Communicant, Congratulations and God’s many blessings as you receive Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion! You have arrived at this point in your life because the people that love you want the very best for your life and for your soul. In reference to you is found the wise advice, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Your families and your teachers have prepared you well for this beautiful moment when you will encounter the God that created you. You will be intimately united to Jesus, in His body and blood, soul and divinity!

But on the day of your First Holy Communion, you are the one who will become the teacher. As your family, teachers and friends look upon you, receiving Jesus for the first time, they will be reminded for what, and for Whom, they were created. First Communicant, thank you for teaching us that we were made for purity, for innocence, for simplicity and for love. Thank you for reminding us, as you approach Jesus with an open and affectionate heart, that we are made for God and that nothing less will ever do. You train us this day in the way that we should go. May we, whether old or young, never depart from it.
