Biodiesel project helping 'Keep the Heat On' clients stay warm

College students John Perino, left, and Cassandra Lin stopped by the diocesan chancery building last week to donate a certificate for 1,000 gallons of biofuel to Bishop Thomas J. Tobin’s “Keep the Heat On” program.

Perino, a student at the University of Southern California, and Lin, who attends Stanford University, are members of a group called Project Turn Grease into Fuel (a part of the Westerly Innovations Network).

Project TGIF is a student-led initiative where restaurants and residents recycle their waste cooking oil. The oil is then converted into biodiesel and donated to charities such as “Keep the Heat On” to help families that need financial assistance to stay warm.

The students, now college freshmen, have been working with “Keep the Heat On” since 2012.
