Special collection planned to assist Louisiana flooding victims

PROVIDENCE — Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has approved an emergency special collection to assist the victims of the 2016 Louisiana Floods at the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Our prayer and material support is urgently needed to help rebuild lives,” Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, president of the USCCB said Sept. 1, in promoting the collection to be taken up across the country. “As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people rescued from the flood waters.” To assist with this effort, each parish in the diocese will take up the collection on the weekend of September 24/25. The Diocese of Providence offers its appreciation in advance for the generous support of its parishioners in response to this appeal.

Program for divorced and separated Catholics to be held

WARWICK — The Diocesan Office of Life and Family will offer the Finding Hope Program for divorced and separated Catholics at St. Catherine Church, 3252 Post Road, upper back entrance. This support group is free and will meet each Tuesday evening for eight consecutive weeks (except for All Saints Day), September 20 through Nov. 15, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Finding Hope program embraces the teachings of the Catholic faith, provides a peaceful group environment to help Catholics heal and cope, provides time to share, and time to discuss topics related to separation and divorce. St. James Chapel to host Oktoberfest event

CHARLESTOWN — St. James Chapel will host Oktoberfest under the tent on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 2 – 5 p.m. Enjoy wursts, kraut, salads, beer and Black Forest cake, or a hamburger plate.

Annual Human Life Guild Day to be held

WARWICK — The Annual Human Life Guild Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at SS. Rose & Clement Church. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will be the main celebrant and homilist for the 9 a.m. Mass which all are invited to attend. Following Mass there will be a brunch and a speaker agenda focusing on: Amoris Laetitia “The Joy of Love;” an overview of public policy and a guide into the world of Down Syndrome. St. Rita’s Women’s Club to host Autumn Bazaar

WARWICK — St. Rita’s Women’s Club will host an Autumn Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the William Shields Post #43, 662 West Shore Road. The bazaar will feature lunch, custom crafts, penny social, raffles, baked goods and much more.

‘Night of Thanks’ to benefit Assumption Parish Food Ministry

PROVIDENCE — The Home Loan Foundation, founded by Home Loan Investment Bank, will host its 5th annual fundraiser to benefit the Assumption Parish Food Ministry on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. This partnership has resulted in nearly $200,000 donated to the Food Ministry on behalf of the Home Loan Foundation. This year’s event, “A Night of Thanks,” will feature music from John Scotti, a raffle, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres prepared by culinary arts students at the Genesis Center, an organization that provides education, job training and support services to people of diverse cultures so that they may achieve economic independence and participate fully in society. Guests are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to help fill the Food Ministry’s Thanksgiving baskets, which will be distributed to more than 1,000 families before the holiday. Pet Blessing in honor of St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day

NEWPORT — The annual Pet Blessing in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, will be held on Oct. 2 at noon at the gazebo in King Park, at the corner of Clinton Street and Wellington Avenue. Feast of St. Teresa to be celebrated

MAPLEVILLE — On Saturday, October 1, Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Parish celebrates the Feast of St. Theresa beginning at 11 a.m. with an outdoor rosary and confessions. Mass will be celebrated at noon with Rev. Edward McIlmail. Sandwiches and salads will be offered at 12:45 p.m. A procession with St. Teresa, will take place at 1:30 p.m., followed by 2 p.m. prayers at the Holy Stairs and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3 p.m.

St. Xavier Academy to sponsor Homecoming

WARWICK — The Class of 1966, St. Xavier Academy, is seeking classmates to celebrate their 50th Year Anniversary at the annual Homecoming and Reunion on Sunday, Oct. 30. Mass will begin the day at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy’s Church, Warwick Avenue. A luncheon will follow at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown. Life Chain Sunday to take place around the diocese

Daughters of Isabella plan Living Rosary for Peace

WARWICK — The Daughters of Isabella St. Benedict Circle #423 will host a Living Rosary for Peace on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Parish, 135 Beach Ave. Sixty representatives are needed for each bead. All local parishes are invited to participate. A signup sheet is provided at the entrance of each parish for all volunteer participants who would like to represent a bead. Knights sponsoring Chowder and Clam Cake Dinner

Islam focus of series at St. Gregory the Great

WARWICK — St. Gregory the Great Parish, 360 Cowesett Road, will host a three-part adult education series, ‘Understanding Islam,’ in the parish center on October 4, 11, and 18 from 7 – 8:15 p.m. The parish Social Action committee is hosting this series as a way to enlighten the parish and the community about one of the world’s most important religions. The sessions will be led by J. Edward Sirois. Sirois has had a long career teaching at LaSalle Academy and is an adjunct professor at several area universities.
