Nominations are open for this year’s Lumen Gentium Awards

LINCOLN — The Diocese of Providence will host the annual Lumen Gentium Awards on May 17, 2017 at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. The diocesan awards formally recognize those who have made significant contributions to the life of the Church in the diocese, working tirelessly, and often without compensation or acclaim because of their devotion to the Church. Nominations for the awards are open now until February 10. The 10 categories in which nominees may be considered for the awards are: Parish Service, Community Service and Charitable Outreach, Catholic Education, Evangelization, Communications, Administration and Stewardship, Respect Life, Public Service, Distinguished Catholic Youth and Friend of the Diocese. St. Augustine School to host Open House

PROVIDENCE — St. Augustine School, 635 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Pre-K 3 and 4 through grade 8, will hold Open Houses for prospective students, parents and grandparents on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 12-1:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 9:30-11 a.m., with tours of the school and classrooms. Devotions to take place in honor of 100th anniversary

PROVIDENCE — To begin preparing for the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Providence will have the devotion of the “Five First Saturdays” in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This devotion is rooted in an apparition that Sister Lucia had on Dec. 10, 1925, in which Our Lady asked her to establish this devotion in honor of her Immaculate Heart. The request is that on five consecutive first Saturdays, people recite the rosary, and if needed, go to confession. A Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on the five first Saturdays from January to May at Our Lady of the Rosary, in preparation for the centennial celebration of the Fatima apparitions. All are welcome to attend. All celebrations will be bilingual English/Portuguese.

Diocese to be featured in USCCB video reflections

PROVIDENCE — The Diocese of Providence will participate in weekly video reflections for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops throughout the month of January. Links to the reflections will be available on www.dioceseofprovidence.org and diocesan social media pages on the following dates: January 11 offered by Father Joseph R. Upton; January 18 offered by Sister Elizabeth Castro, HMSP; and January 25 offered by Msgr. John C. Halloran. Recordings are funded in part by donations to the Catholic Communication Campaign.

Women of Grace Study Program to begin in January

BARRINGTON — Holy Angels Church will again be hosting the Women of Grace Study Program, “Full of Grace: Women and the Abundant Life” starting in late January 2017. St. Brigid’s Church to host bowling day for families

JOHNSTON — St. Brigid Church Social Ministry will host a fun day for families and friends on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Town Hall Bowling Lanes, 1463 Atwood Ave., from 1:45 – 4 p.m. Children under 5 years of age are free! Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to visit Our Lady of Loreto

EAST PROVIDENCE—Our Lady of Loreto, 346 Waterman Ave., will host the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, Jan. 17, beginning with the rosary on 6:40 a.m., followed by a 7 a.m. Mass, Veneration throughout the day, a presentation at 4 p.m., and a Holy Hour at 7 p.m., during which Father Dean Perri will present a homily on Our Lady of Guadalupe. Annual Respect Life Mass to take place at St. Paul’s Church

CRANSTON — On January 21, the Office of Life and Family Ministry will host the annual Respect Life Mass at St. Paul’s in Cranston. This Mass begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by a reception at the school. The Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be on the altar during the Mass. Thirteen children of St. Charles Borromeo in Providence will be presenting a rose to Our Lady during the Mass. The image will then be transferred to St. Paul’s School auditorium for the reception and veneration.

Take part in the 2017 March for Life

PROVIDENCE — The Office of Life and Family Ministry is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. , for the 44th Annual March for Life – a peaceful and prayerful march to the U.S. Supreme Court. The cost for the overnight ride is $80 per person and will be leaving R.I. on Thursday, Jan. 26 from various locations beginning at 7:30 p.m. Participants will visit the Verizon Center for the Youth Rally and Mass. Ham and Bean Supper to be held at St. Mary Church

WEST WARWICK — St. Mary Church, 70 Church St., will host its annual Ham and Bean Supper on Saturday, Jan. 14 (snow date, Saturday, Jan. 21). The menu will include appetizers, Butterball Ham, B&M Baked Beans, salad, bread and butter, beverages, coffee and homemade desserts. Children under 5 eat free. St. Gregory Knights of Columbus to sponsor Taste of Italy

WARWICK — The St. Gregory the Great Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a Taste of Italy on Saturday, January 28 at 6 p.m. in the church hall, 360 Cowesett Ave. Chef Domenic Rozzero, a parishioner and K of C member, has put together an authentic Italian dinner menu including Pasta Domenic Style, baked cod fish Italiano, chicken parmesan and assorted Italian deserts. All food will be made from scratch at the church. A cash bar will be available. Proceeds from this dinner will benefit the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus. ‘Stand and Light Up the Night’ film to be shown at Holy Ghost Church

TIVERTON — A free viewing of the new short film entitled “Stand and Light Up the Night,” will be held at Holy Ghost Church, 316 Judson St., on Monday, Jan. 30, from 7 – 8 p.m. The film features five young and brave advocates for the unborn. Prout Arts festival to benefit mission work in Haiti

WAKEFIELD — The Prout School will host an Arts Festival on January 13 from 6 – 8 p.m. The Arts Festival is a celebration of the work of all student artists, musicians, actors and dancers who have participated in the school’s arts curriculum for the first semester of the academic year. From 6 – 6:30 p.m., students from AP Art and Advanced Ceramics discuss their works and their inspiration. Engineering projects will also be presented. Visual Arts displays will feature both 2-D and 3-D artwork by students including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and graphic design. From 6:30 – 7 p.m., members of our band, string ensemble and choir will be performing. From 7- 8 p.m., musical theater and dance performances will take place in the auditorium. Throughout the evening, The Prout Theater Community will be selling food and drink in the auditorium lobby. Additionally, items made by ceramics club members will be for sale. All proceeds from the ceramics sale to benefit the Life Connection Mission in Montrouis, Haiti.

Knights to host upcoming meals at council hall

NORTH KINGSTOWN — The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a breakfast on Sunday, Jan.15, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Scrambled eggs, bacon, Nutella French toast, home fries, baked beans, hot and cold cereal, orange juice, coffee and tea will be served. Children six and under are free. The Knights will also sponsor a Lasagna Dinner council hall, 1265 Tower Hill Road, on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Assorted lasagna, tossed salad, garlic bread, coffee and tea will be served.
