Legion of Mary celebration

PAWTUCKET—The Legion of Mary of St. John the Baptist Church, 69 Quincy Ave., will celebrate the centennial of the birth of Venerable Edel Quinn, October 20, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., in the church. Father Gerald Harbour, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, will lead the recitation of the rosary, prayers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in English and Spanish. Following the service, participants will gather for lunch and a short dramatization of Quinn’s life. Participants should bring a bag lunch; refreshments and beverages will be served.

Adult faith formation program

WOONSOCKET—The Northern Rhode Island Adult Faith Formation Committee will sponsor a presentation entitled “The Controversy on Stem-Cell Research,” Oct. 21, 3:30 p.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Parish hall, corner of North Main and Daniels streets.

Becket Lecture

PROVIDENCE — The Thomas Becket Association and the Brown-RISD Roman Catholic Community will sponsor the annual Becket Lecture, October 19, 4 p.m., in the Petteruti Lounge, Faunce House, Brown University. Dominican Father Brian J. Shanley, president of Providence College, will present a talk entitled “The Harmony of Faith and Reason.” The talk will explore the profound influence Thomas Aquinas’s thought had on the relationship between reason and faith in Roman Catholic theology. Providence College lecture

PROVIDENCE — Providence College’s Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies, corner of Eaton Street and River Avenue, will present the lecture “Words and Silence: The Contemplation and Action of Thomas Merton,” October 11, 3:30-5:00 p.m., at the center. Dominican Father Thomas D. McGonigle, associate professor of history and director of the center, will present the talk, and Dominican Father Gabriel Pivarnik, instructor in theology, will be the respondent. Office of Worship concert, workshop

WARWICK — On October 19 and 20, Jeanne Cotter, an internationally- known liturgical composer, recording and performance artist and inspirational speaker, will present a concert and workshop at St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road. The concert will be held on October 19, 7:30 p.m., followed by a retreat, “We are Called: A Day of Reflection and Renewal for Liturgical Ministers,” October 20, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. The workshop is free but pre-registration is requested. Rosary, prayers for peace

WARREN—St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main St. will hold a prayer service and recitation of the rosary for peace in the world, Oct. 13, 4 p.m., on the church lawn.
