St. Philip community supports their ‘spiritual father’

PROVIDENCE—As Bishop Robert C. Evans was ordained auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Providence, his pastoral family of St. Philip Church and school watched with admiration and pride as their spiritual father was appointed and entrusted with a position linking him with the Apostles.

Sixty-seven students from fifth through eight grade of St. Philip School were honored to be present at the ordination of the loving guide of St. Philip Church, Bishop Evans.

Darlene Walsh, principal of the school, explained that the students and faculty felt a great amount of pride attending the ordination of their accomplished pastor.

“This was a grace-filled event,” said Walsh. “We are just feeling so blessed. The children think that Bishop Evans is an incredible shepherd. He has connected very quickly with the children and the parish. They enjoy being around him.”

Bishop Evans said that having his St. Philip family present at his ordination brought a personal dimension to his entire day.

“I was and still remain pastor of a Catholic family, St. Philips Church,” said Bishop Evans. “The fact that so many have shared their congratulations with me, that they have shared a certain pride that their spiritual father has been made auxiliary bishop remains so special today. The fact that they are here is very special to me.”

Seventh grader, Liam Stamp, said that he was happy to be able to attend the ordination of a priest that he knows so well.

“I’ve known him for a while,” said Liam. “He’s really funny and he has really cool hats. I am excited that he is a bishop.”

Eight grader, Noelle Crouchley said that she admires the dedication of Bishop Evans and was pleased that he was being ordained.

“He’s really involved in the school,” said Crouchley. “Every morning he greets us when we get in to school. He is the bishop I know best.”

St. Philip parishioner, Elizabeth Stamp of Johnston has four children who attend St. Philip School. She said that in the few years that Bishop Evans has been at the parish he has inspired the students and made a difference at the Church.

“He is very wonderful and so personable,” said Elizabeth. “I am a big proud supporter of him.”

Sandra Philips, who teaches middle school, grades 6, 7, and 8, said that Bishop Evans loves the children and was deeply appreciative that they could attend his ordination.

“I think it is a wonderful honor for him,” said Philips. “He makes a nice presence at the school and parish. He comes over in the morning and chats with the students. I think it was a nice honor for the children to come today.”

Humbly, Bishop Evans said that as a priestly man he has always said yes to the Lord and has faithfully tried to follow God’s will.

“God’s choices are surprising,” said Bishop Evans. “He knows us better than we know ourselves and he knows what we are able to do. God does inspire us and gives us the work he wants us to do. He will make it clear one day at a time. The Lord does know best.”

Walsh shared that St. Philip School were blessed to receive this unique and special opportunity to witness the ordination of their beloved pastor to auxiliary bishop

“It was really a once in a lifetime opportunity to be connected with the bishop and be here for his ordination,” said Walsh. “We are very proud of him.”
