PARISH MISSIONS 2010
Lenten missions throughout the Diocese of Providence

Rhode Island Catholic invited parishes to share information about their upcoming Lenten Missions. The following parishes responded.

St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St. Narragansett, will offer a Lenten retreat, Feb. 21-23, 7 p.m. The mission will be conducted by Father Jack Gleason, whose theme will be, “The Journey of Discipleship: Reflections from Luke’s Gospel.” For more information, call 789-7682; or visit the Web site: www.stthomasmoreri.org.

Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich, will conduct its annual Lenten mission Feb. 22-24. The mission preacher will be Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, whose theme for the mission is, “Lent: The Journey from Sin to Grace, From Death to Life.” Following is the mission schedule: Feb. 22, Mass, 7 p.m.; Feb. 23, Penance Service, 7 p.m.; Feb. 24, Mass, 7 p.m. Bishop Tobin will also celebrate the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Feb. 21 to introduce the mission. St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, will continue its Lenten mission, Feb. 18, 25, March 4 and 11, 7 p.m. Father Richard Walsh is preaching the mission themed, “The Gospel of Luke.” For more information, call 683-1343.

St. Cecilia Church, 1253 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, will hold a Lenten mission, Feb. 28-March 3, 7 p.m. Dominican Father Michael Sullivan will lead the mission themed, “The Seven Sacraments.” For more information, call 722-1101; or log onto the Web site: www.saintcecilias.com.

St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett, will offer a Lenten mission, March 1-3, 7 p.m. Father David Gaffney, director of spiritual formation at Our Lady of Providence Seminary and chaplain, Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, will conduct the mission, themed “Living the ‘Our Father.’” Mass will be celebrated each night. St. Mary Church, 538 Broadway, Providence, will hold a Lenten Mission, March 1-3, 7 p.m. Franciscan Father Hugh Macsherry will conduct the mission themed, “We are a Franciscan Community: A Call to Welcome, Love and Serve.” For more information, call 274-3434; or visit the Web site: www.stfrancischapel.com.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 178 Dexter St., Providence, will offer a Lenten mission and healing service, March 9, in English and Spanish; March 10, in English, 7 p.m. The mission will be conducted by Father Tom DiLorenzo. For more information, call 421-6441.

St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick, will hold a Lenten mission,” March 8-10, 7 p.m. The mission will be presented by Franciscan Father Raphael Bonanno of the Boston-based Franciscan Ministry of the Word, and will focus on the themes of “LIving in the Embrace of God”; Forgiveness as a Path to Peace”; and “Healing the Human Heart.” Father Bonanno will also celebrate Mass each morning at 8:30 a.m. The church is handicapped accessible. St. Leo the Great Church, 697 Central St., Pawtucket, will offer a Lenten mission, March 8-10, 7 p.m. The mission will be conducted by Msgr. St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Ave., Providence, will hold a Lenten Mission, March 8-10, 7 p.m. The mission will be led by Dominican Father Gabriel Pavarnik, whose theme will be, “The Woman at the Well.” For more information, call 272-7118.

St. Paul the Apostle Church, 116 A Danielson Pike, Foster, will host a Lenten mission, March 13-17, 7 p.m. The mission will be preached by Dominican Father Aedan McKeon of Ossining, N.Y., whose themes are: Monday, “God’s Welcome: ‘I Want to Stay at Your House Today’”; Tuesday, “God’s Love Heals and Frees Us”; Wednesday, “Forgiveness.” For more information, call 647-3664.

St. Francis de Sales Church, 381 School St., North Kingstown, will offer a Lenten mission, March 15-17, 7 p.m. The mission will be conducted by Passionist Father Jack Connor, whose theme will be, “Our Universal Call to Holiness.” For more information, call 884-2105; or visit the Web site: www.saintfds.org.

St. Lucy Church, West Main Road, Middletown, is hosting a Lenten Mission to be led by Father Patrick Martin, internationally known preacher, on March 1, 2, 3. Sick with tubercular meningitis at age nine, Father Pat’s recovery was miraculous but his vision was severely impaired. Father Pat operates from the belief that God has given us many gifts and all are equal in God’s eyes. Each of us is called to function according to gifts we’ve received. Father Pat will be talking to us about: “God’s Love in our Broken Lives.” Mass will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Father Pat’s mission talk at homily time. Father Pat will be available for confession and consultation from 10:00am to 12:00pm and from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The church will also be open during these times for personal devotions, adoration and private prayer. All are welcome. For more information, call 847-6153.

Holy Apostles Church, 800 Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston, will hold a Lenten mission, March 1-3, 7 p.m. The mission preacher will be Father Michael Colello, administrative secretary to Bishop Thomas J. Tobin. The theme of the mission is, “The Last Words of Christ.” The mission will be introduced at all weekend Masses. Father Colello’s topics will be: Monday, “Father, Forgive Them”; Tuesday, “This Day You Will Be With Me in Paradise”; Wednesday, “My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?” For more information, call 946-5586.

St. Ambrose Church, 191 School St., Albion, will host its annual parish Lenten mission, March 6-10. The mission will be preached by Msgr. Kieran E. Harrington of the Diocese of Brooklyn, N.Y., and is themed “Priest as Pilgrim: Leading and Following God’s Holy People.” Msgr. Harrington will reflect upon the Lenten messages found in the books “Diary of a Country Priest”; “The Power and the Glory”; and “Silence.” The mission will begin at the weekend Masses, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday, 9 and 11 a.m., and will continue with a Mission Mass, Monday-Wednesday, 7 p.m. On Wednesday, confessions will be heard by visiting priests beginning at 6 p.m. For more information, call 333-1568; or visit the Web site: http://www.stambrosechurch.org/.
